Productive Capacity

Maintenance of the productive capacity of forest ecosystems has been identified as one of the key criteria for sustainable forest management in Australia.  State forests are managed and harvested to meet our daily needs for wood and non-wood products.  It is essential therefore that current production levels do not compromise the ongoing productive capacity of forests.

Outside of Parks and other tenures that exclude harvesting, forests in Australia are managed to produce a sustainable yield of wood and non-wood products.  This means not harvesting more than the forest can regenerate. To achieve this, forest managers track production volumes over time to assess levels of production and capacity.  Changes in productive capacity impact upon Australia’s ability to supply forest products to both national and international markets.
