The Forest Products Commission (FPC) is the State Government body responsible for the harvesting and sale of timber, which is only permissible on State forest and timber reserves. DEC works closely with the FPC to ensure that their activities on State forest and timber reserves are consistent with the requirements of the Forest Management Plan 2004-2013 (FMP) for sustained timber yield and the protection of nature conservation, water catchment, soil, recreation and cultural values.

Programs
The Commonwealth and State Government signed a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) in 1999 for the south-west forests. The agreements in the RFA were incorporated into the FMP for the south-west forests, which commenced in January 2004. The FMP formalised the ending of logging in all old-growth forests managed by DEC, which the State Government implemented in 2001 through its Protecting our old-growth forests policy. The FMP provides for 1.21 million hectares of forest available for timber production and 1.26 million hectares in conservation reserves. The FMP sets the sustained yield for jarrah and karri sawlogs and describes the requirements for ecologically sustainable forest management.
