MANAGING AUSTRALIA'S FORESTS

Policies & Programs

Western Australia

The area of forest in Western Australia totals approximately 25 million hectares, which is about 9% of the area of the State.  However, tall forests only occur in the south-west corner of the State and occupy approximately 2.5 million hectares.  Forests occur on a range of land tenures; State forests, national parks, conservation parks, nature reserves, other crown reserves and unvested crown land.  The Conservation Commission of Western Australia is the vesting body for State forest, national parks, conservation parks and nature reserves and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) manages the forests on those land categories in accordance with management plans.

The Forest Products Commission (FPC) is the State Government body responsible for the harvesting and sale of timber, which is only permissible on State forest and timber reserves.  DEC works closely with the FPC to ensure that their activities on State forest and timber reserves are consistent with the requirements of the Forest Management Plan 2004-2013 (FMP) for sustained timber yield and the protection of nature conservation, water catchment, soil, recreation and cultural values.

Programs

The Commonwealth and State Government signed a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) in 1999 for the south-west forests.  The agreements in the RFA were incorporated into the FMP for the south-west forests, which commenced in January 2004.  The FMP formalised the ending of logging in all old-growth forests managed by DEC, which the State Government implemented in 2001 through its Protecting our old-growth forests policy.  The FMP provides for 1.21 million hectares of forest available for timber production and 1.26 million hectares in conservation reserves.  The FMP sets the sustained yield for jarrah and karri sawlogs and describes the requirements for ecologically sustainable forest management.
