MANAGING AUSTRALIA'S FORESTS

Policies & Programs

South Australia

ForestrySA  is the South Australian Government's forest management agency, responsible for 125,000 hectares of plantation and native forest in the State.  Its primary role is to provide softwood logs to the South Australian sawmilling industry.  It also supplies forest products to other industries, undertakes research and development programs, and provides community and recreational facilities within its forests.  Recreational use of forestry land has been a long-established tradition in South Australia and is an important part of ForestrySA’s plantation operations.

ForestrySA also manages 23,900 ha of Native Forest Reserves for nature conservation. These forests are all located in the high rainfall areas of the State and are managed for the conservation of biodiversity to ensure their long term future. There is no harvesting of timber from ForestrySA native forests.  The majority of forests have long term management plans in place that recognise that the ecosystems are dynamic and have had some form of disturbance in their history.

The Department for Environment and Heritage is responsible for a network of parks throughout the State.  Many of these parks are of international importance due to their scenic landscapes, unique flora and fauna, and the visitor experiences and cultural heritage opportunities they provide.  Heritage, conservation, rangeland and native vegetation programs run by the Department have received national recognition.

Programs

More than 20 million hectares of South Australia’s land area is protected under the parks system, with a further 556,000 hectares protected by private landowners in more than 1,200 voluntary heritage agreements.  The State’s parks system includes more than 300 reserves, covering the full spectrum of conservation land use - from multiple-use Regional Reserves to Wilderness Protection Areas.

As well as protecting native forest, ForestrySA is working to increase South Australia’s plantation forest resource through research and development and by providing advice and services to the private forestry sector, including industrial, investment and farm forestry.

It has played a significant role in the development of hardwood and softwood plantations on private land in the Green Triangle Region and on Kangaroo Island and is currently involved in programs to produce hardwood and softwood timber for both local and overseas markets.
