Northern Territory
The Northern Territory occupies an area of about 1,364,000 km2, or about one-sixth of Australia's land area. Land tenure in the Territory is pastoral, Aboriginal, and conservation reserves, although some Aboriginal lands are used for pastoralism, and others (such as Kakadu) are managed as National Parks. Pastoral lands occupy about 45% of the Territory and Aboriginal lands about 50%.
The Crops, Forestry and Horticulture Division is part of the Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines in the Northern Territory. It provides applied research, development and extension services to facilitate plant-based industry development in the Northern Territory.
The Parks and Wildlife Service NT is a division of the Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, and the Arts. The Service is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive system of protected land areas for the Territory. The Service manages over 90 parks and reserves for conservation and nature based recreation and tourism. 32 of the over 90 parks and reserves are managed in partnership with Aboriginal people.

Programs
The Northern Territory Parks and Conservation Masterplan is being developed by the Northern Territory Government, through the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts, in association with the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage and the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Councils. The draft Masterplan provides future directions for the conservation of the Northern Territory's biodiversity and for the continued development of parks and reserves over the next 15 years.
The Parks and Wildlife Service NT conducts surveys and research into the Northern Territory’s flora and fauna. This research aims to improve knowledge, identify priority conservation areas and develop strategies for the conservation, management and sustainable use of the Territory’s flora and fauna across all land tenures.
