MANAGING AUSTRALIA'S FORESTS

Policies & Programs

Australian Capital Territory

Environment ACT is responsible for the management of approximately 26,000 hectares of public land in the ACT.  Prior to the January 2003 bushfires, Environment ACT managed around 16,000 hectares of commercial pine plantations and 10,000 hectares of other land for conservation and recreation amenity use.

The 2003 bushfires destroyed approximately 10,500 hectares of plantation, leaving 5,500 hectares at Kowen untouched by the fires.  In 2004, the ACT Government decided to re-establish most of the former pine plantations west of the Murrumbidgee, with native vegetation. Water quality, fire abatement and recreation are the main objectives of this rehabilitation.
