Australia’s Forest Information
The Australian Government understands that best practice forest management is based on best practice forest information. For this reason they have set up the Forest and Vegetation Sciences Program to analyse and report on national forest and vegetation data.
The Program supports inter-governmental arrangements such as the Regional Forest Agreements; updates forest inventory, analysis and modelling methods; and contributes to Australia's international objectives for sustainable forest management.
There are a number of inventory systems that contribute to Australia’s forest data collection, including the National Forest Inventory, the National Vegetation Information System, and the National Plantation Inventory.
The National Forestry Inventory collects and communicates information on Australia’s forests to support the development of sound forest policies, viable forest industries and effective forest conservation strategies. The information is then published in a variety of forms to help the broader community understand forests in Australia.

The National Vegetation Information System provides easily accessible and nationally consistent Australian vegetation data including types of vegetation, extent of vegetation and condition of vegetation. Almost all of the data is provided by the States and Territories, and provides vegetation surveys and mapping using a variety of methods and classifications.
For more information, visit the National Vegetation Information System website.
The National Plantation Inventory reports on Australia’s plantations and farm forests. All data in the inventory is supplied voluntarily by stakeholders. It provides information on regional distribution of plantations as well as ownership and plantation types, and forecasts potential wood supply.

The State of the Forests Report is a public report published every five years. It provides a comprehensive description of Australia’s forests including information about the broad characteristics, extent and ownerships of Australia’s forests.
